External Wall Insulation in Central Scotland

External Wall Insulation Near Me in Central Scotland

What is External Wall Insulation?

External Wall Insulation, mainly known as (EWI), involves adding insulation materials to the external walls of your property, to help improve insulation and heat loss. This massively helps reduce the cost of heating your Central Scotland home, making it more energy efficient and warmer, reducing the amount of heat which is lost through external walls.

EWI Can Also:

  • Lower bills
  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • Improve building durability
  • Enhance the appearance and kerb appeal with new render finishes

External Wall Insulation works great with solid wall structures and properties with poor insulation.

Frequently Asked Questions?

External wall insulation involves attaching a layer of insulation material to the exterior walls of your home. This is then covered with a protective render or cladding to enhance both the thermal efficiency and the appearance of your property.

External wall insulation offers several benefits, including:

  • Improved Energy Efficiency: Reduces heat loss, leading to lower energy bills.
  • Enhanced Comfort: Keeps your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
  • Aesthetic Improvement: Can refresh and modernize the appearance of your home's exterior.
  • Increased Property Value: Energy-efficient homes are more attractive to potential buyers.

The amount you can save depends on various factors, such as the size and type of your property. However, many homeowners see a significant reduction in their heating costs, sometimes up to 30%.

Most homes with solid walls are suitable for external wall insulation. It's particularly effective for older properties that lack cavity walls. An assessment by a professional installer from ERG (Central Scotland) Ltd can confirm suitability and provide tailored advice.

The installation process typically involves the following steps:

  1. Preparation: Cleaning the walls and fixing any structural issues.
  2. Insulation Attachment: Fixing insulation boards or panels to the exterior walls.
  3. Reinforcement: Applying a base coat and embedding a reinforcing mesh.
  4. Finishing: Adding a final coat of render or cladding to protect and decorate the surface.

The time required for installation can vary depending on the size of your property and the complexity of the project. On average, it takes between 1 to 3 weeks to complete.

Yes, but in a positive way. External wall insulation can improve the appearance of your property by covering up old, weathered brickwork and allowing for a fresh, modern finish. Various textures and colours of render or cladding are available to suit your aesthetic preferences.

In most cases, external wall insulation does not require planning permission. However, if your property is listed or located in a conservation area, you may need to seek approval. It’s always best to check with your local planning authority.

Our EWI Installation Process

This helps you identify if the render is strong enough to support the insulation. If the render is strong, it is smoothened for installation and if not, the entire existing render is removed.

All the pipework is removed from the building before installation.

Fit a protective layer or film over the doors and windows preventing them from being damaged.

You determine the height where the insulation will begin then, an aluminium start track is installed.

A layer of adhesive is applied onto the board and then stuck on the wall in a staggered pattern. To ensure the surface is entirely flat, a rasp is used to file off the edges of the boards.

This is used to secure the insulation boards ensuring they are rigid.

To ensure the doors, windows and obstructions are secure and tight, you should use corner beads and stop beads.

Fibreglass mesh is fitted between two layers of render to increase the strengthening properties.

It contains granules that help the final render coat to stick.
